The blossoming medical marijuana industry is legal in 18 states and the District of Columbia, at least under state and local laws.
And many of these operations are run by small-scale owners who are trying to perfect their business models, making decisions on the products they sell and how they serve their customers.
Pot jokes aside, the medical marijuana industry isn’t necessarily for the laid-back entrepreneur. Shopkeepers in this market face the challenges common to any small business, as well as obstacles unique to their field, including the still-questionable status of it all.
Kayvan Khalatbari, co-owner of Denver Relief, one of the oldest medical marijuana facilities in Colorado, recently outlined some of the unique challenges facing people working in his industry.
